Avoiding input to the area that stimulates the tonic bite helps to decrease the responses. Tonic bite often occurs with stimulus to lateral borders of gums/molar area. To inhibit a bite when feeding, use a narrow spoon or blade. A quick stretch upwards through the mandible helps release the contraction. Use of a rubber spoon or coated spoon is important when feeding someone with tonic bite reflex to protect the patient’s gums and teeth.
