An OT is working with a patient on self feeding. Currently the patient is functioning at Level V (Confused-inappropriate) on the
Rancho Los Amigos scale and has difficulty chewing and swallowing various types of foods. What would be the best action the OT can take next to help the patient with his goal?
A) Ensure the food is cut up in small pieces to prevent choking
B) Have the patient take a drink of water after every bite
C) Only give the patient one food type at a time
D) Provide the patient with pureed foods

The OT is working with the patient on self-feeding and giving the patient one food type at a time will help the patient with this goal. Feeding is not the same as eating or swallowing. If the OT was working on the swallow reflex then putting the patient on a puree diet would be the answer.
