Gwen is a 28-year-old woman who has sustained a traumatic brain injury. Even though she has right side weakness, deficits in visual perception, and significantly reduced reaction time, she is convinced that she can leave the inpatient rehabilitation unit and drive herself home. What frame of reference should the OT use to show Gwen that her expectations about driving are not realistic?

Cognitive-Perceptual. Also called Psychoeducation, this frame of reference uses education of the patient about his or her condition to help change the patient’s thinking and behavior. In this case, the OT should educate the woman about the effects of traumatic brain injury and her specific limitations to show the woman that she is not currently capable of driving.
