Candy is a 59-year-old woman with a diagnosis of diabetes who has sustained a right cerebrovascular accident (CVA) with left hemiparesis. She has very limited active movement in her left arm and her arm has become very swollen. What should the OT recommend to nursing staff to control the edema in Candy’s left arm?
=> Massage, elevation and compression wraps

=> A hemi-arm sling
=> A low sodium diet

Massage, elevation and compression wraps. The OT should recommend edema control techniques to nursing staff to help reduce edema in Candy’s left arm as soon as possible. She can train the staff in anti-edema massage techniques, as well as how to elevate Candy’s arm and how to use compression wraps or garments effectively to reduce edema.
