Reassure the woman and redirect her to another topic. Patients with this level of dementia do not have the capability of orienting to reality for more than very brief periods of time. If the OT confronts this patient with reality, the patient will not remember the information and may become agitated. Therefore, the OT should reassure the patient that her kids are taken care of and redirect her to another topic. Nursing staff will already be aware of the patient’s level of dementia.
